Rotation of the Disk of the Large Magellanic Cloud
نویسنده
چکیده
The rotation of the disk of the LMC is derived from the radial velocities of 975 carbon stars. The radial component of the disk’s velocity ellipsoid is σR = 28 ± 14 km s . The disk rotates with a true maximum circular velocity of 79 km s after correcting for asymmetric drift. For a typical submaximal disk, the LMC’s dark halo has a mass of 1× 10M⊙ inside of 10 kpc. If the LMC microlensing lens population is a halo of stars in the LMC, its mass-to-light ratio is > 10.

Magnetic Field Structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud from Faraday Rotation Measures of Diffuse Polarized Emission
We present a study of the magnetic field of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), carried out using diffuse polarized synchrotron emission data at 1.4 GHz acquired at the Parkes Radio Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The observed diffuse polarized emission is likely to originate above the LMC disk on the near side of the galaxy. Consistent negative rotation measures (RMs) derive...
متن کاملDark Bulge, Exponential Disk, and Massive Halo in the Large Magellanic Cloud
The rotation curve of the Large Magellanic Cloud, which we have derived from high-resolution HI position-velocity diagrams observed by Kim et al (1998), shows a steep central rise and flat rotation with a gradual rise toward the edge. Using the rotation curve, we have calculated the distribution of surface mass density, and show that the LMC has a dark compact bulge, an exponential disk, and a ...
متن کاملFormation of the Small Magellanic Cloud: ancient major merger as a solution to the kinematical differences between old stars and HI gas
Recent observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have revealed that the HI gas shows a significant amount of rotation (Vc ∼ 60 km s ), while no or little rotation is evident for the old stellar populations. We suggest that this unique kinematical difference between these components in the SMC can be caused by a major merger event which occurred in the early stage of the SMC formation. Ou...
متن کاملA New Look at the Kinematics of Neutral Hydrogen in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We have used the latest HI observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Parkes telescope, to re-examine the kinematics of this dwarf, irregular galaxy. A large velocity gradient is found in the HI velocity field with a significant symmetry in iso-velocity contours, suggestive of a differential rotation. A comparison of HI data wit...
متن کاملOn the Consistency between the Outer Rotation Curve of the Galaxy and the Microlensing Rate towards the Large Magellanic Cloud
Recent determination of the outer rotation curve of the Galaxy suggests that the total Galactic mass is likely to concentrate into a region of radius ∼ 2R0. If this finding is correct, the previously estimated optical depth of microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) should be correspondingly reduced. It appears that a truncated Galactic halo model instead of the standard is...
